In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
