At least thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
